How Training Develops

Training at YBAC progresses with the athlete. Early stages emphasize strong fundamentals, body awareness, skill development, and confidence. As athletes grow, training becomes increasingly specific and introduces greater physical demand, racing skills, strength development, and ownership of the training process.

Technique

Build efficient movement in all four strokes, starts, turns, underwater skills, and racing fundamentals before increasing training demands.

Training Capacity

Progress from learning how to practice managing greater volume, intensity, and complexity while maintaining quality technique.

Strength + Movement

Develop movement competency, mobility, coordination, and body control before progressing into structured strength and power training.

Racing

Learn how to compete through race skills, pacing, execution, and progressively higher levels of competition.

Athlete Ownership

Build communication, consistency, accountability, and an increasing understanding of individual training and performance.

The goal is not to move athletes through the pathway as quickly as possible. It is to give them the foundation they need to be successful at the next stage.

Strength & Movement Development

Strength training at YBAC develops alongside the athlete. The goal is not simply to add weight or make training harder, but to build athletes who move well, tolerate training demands, and are prepared for continued development.

Younger and developing athletes begin with movement quality, coordination, mobility, stability, and control. As athletes grow and demonstrate readiness, training progresses into foundational strength and eventually more advanced strength, power, and performance work.

Growth and maturation are considered throughout this process. Periods of rapid growth can temporarily change mobility, coordination, and movement patterns, so training may be adjusted as an athlete develops.

By progressing movement before load and strength before higher performance demands, we can better prepare athletes for both the pool and the physical demands that come with long-term training.

Growth + Development

Athletes do not all develop at the same rate. Two swimmers of the same age may be at very different stages physically, technically, and emotionally, and their training needs may look different as a result.

YBAC considers growth and maturation alongside swimming ability when making training decisions. During periods of rapid growth, athletes may experience temporary changes in coordination, mobility, strength, or feel for the water. Training can be adjusted to help athletes adapt while continuing to build strong movement and technical foundations.

Coaches consider the individual athlete — not simply their age, size, or current performance — when determining appropriate training demands and progression.

Development is rarely a straight line. Our goal is to give athletes the time, instruction, and appropriate challenge they need at each stage of their growth.

Moving Between Groups

Advancement through YBAC is based on readiness for the next training environment, not a single time standard, age, or performance.

Coaches evaluate athletes throughout the season and consider technical development, training consistency, physical readiness, maturity, communication, and the ability to successfully manage the expectations of the next group.

A faster time does not always mean an athlete is ready to move, just as an athlete may demonstrate readiness in areas that are not reflected on the results page.

Group placement is intended to provide the right level of challenge while allowing athletes to continue developing with confidence and consistency. When an athlete is ready to advance, coaches will communicate with the athlete and family about the next step in their pathway.

Where Competition Fits

Competition is an important part of athlete development, but it is not the only measure of progress.

Meets give athletes an opportunity to apply what they have practiced, develop racing skills, experience different levels of competition, and learn how to respond to both successful and challenging performances.

As athletes progress through YBAC, their competition opportunities develop with them—from learning how to participate in a meet to preparing for championship and higher-level competition.

Results matter, but so does the process behind them. Coaches use competition to evaluate race execution, technical development, decision-making, preparation, and how an athlete responds under pressure.

The goal is to develop athletes who understand how to compete—not simply athletes who know how to chase a time.

Developing the Athlete + the Person

The YBAC pathway is designed to develop more than swimming performance. Through training, competition, teamwork, and increasing responsibility, athletes learn skills that extend beyond the pool.

As athletes progress, they are expected to take greater ownership of their preparation, communicate with coaches, support their teammates, respond to challenges, and understand the role their daily choices play in long-term development.

Our coaches work to challenge athletes appropriately while providing an environment where they can develop confidence, independence, discipline, and leadership.

Success will look different for every athlete. Our responsibility is to help each swimmer build the skills, habits, and foundation to continue moving forward—in the pool and beyond it.
