Swimming Has Always Had A Home Here
Competitive swimming at the Alamance County Community YMCA began long before the YBAC Hurricanes name appeared on caps and team shirts. Over the years, different teams, coaches, athletes, and families helped build a strong swimming tradition within the YMCA.
That history created the foundation for what would eventually become YBAC — a program shaped by generations of local swimmers and strengthened by a shared commitment to development, competition, and community.
The Beginning of YBAC
When the Alamance County Community YMCA was founded, its purpose was simple: strengthen the community by investing in young people. As competitive swimming grew within the YMCA, local athletes developed a love for the sport, but many families needed a place where swimmers could continue developing beyond seasonal programs.
That opportunity came in 2005.
The Alamance County Community YMCA partnered with the City of Burlington to create the YBAC Hurricanes, establishing a year-round competitive swim team that combined the YMCA's commitment to youth development with expanded training and competition opportunities at the Maynard Aquatic Center.
From the beginning, YBAC was built on the belief that success meant more than faster times. The goal was to develop athletes with confidence, discipline, character, and a lifelong love for swimming while creating a program that families could call home.
As the team continued to grow, YBAC became a member of USA Swimming in 2007, opening additional opportunities for athletes to compete while remaining rooted in the YMCA values that shaped the program from day one.
A New Chapter
As the needs of our athletes and community evolved, so did YBAC.
What began through a partnership to provide year-round competitive swimming has grown into a program fully rooted at the Alamance County Community YMCA. Today, YBAC trains, develops, and competes as the YMCA's competitive swim team, carrying forward the same commitment to developing young people through excellence, discipline, and character.
While our home has changed over the years, our purpose has not. Every generation of athletes, coaches, volunteers, and families has helped shape the program into what it is today — a place where swimmers are challenged to grow not only as competitors, but as leaders both in and out of the pool.

Today, YBAC is proud to call the Alamance County Community YMCA home.
What began as an opportunity to provide local athletes with year-round competitive swimming has grown into a program focused on developing confident, resilient young people through the sport of swimming. Every practice, competition, and team experience is built around the belief that success is measured by more than times on a scoreboard. It is measured by character, discipline, leadership, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Our athletes come from diverse backgrounds, schools, and communities throughout the region, but they share a common purpose—to work hard, support one another, and pursue excellence together. Whether a swimmer is preparing for their first meet or competing on the national stage, every athlete follows the same development pathway built on strong fundamentals, intentional coaching, and long-term growth.
While our program continues to evolve, our purpose remains the same: to create an environment where young people are challenged to become their best—not only as swimmers, but as teammates, leaders, and members of their community.
The story of YBAC is still being written, and every athlete, family, coach, volunteer, and supporter who walks through our doors becomes part of that story.
